At Home in Joshua Tree for the Holidays

Slowing down to enjoy the sweet moments is certainly not easy, especially this time of year. Ironically, in order to leave time and space for less, more work, more everything inevitably follows. For all of the extra work that we did to prepare for hosting our families in Joshua Tree this year, we were rewarded with more time outdoors (and incredibly beautiful weather). We spent Christmas afternoon enjoying a meal together in 75 degree sunshine, followed by a sunset hike.

When hiking with family of all ages, Barker Dam is an amazing trail to go on. My 84 year old grandfather hiked this with us! While there are some minor inclines, its overall an easy trail with so much to see: animals, incredible plant life, and of course water, the main reason for this gathering of life.

As we were hiking the trail this time, we turned the corner to see the most stunning creature – a bighorn sheep. We had never seen one so close before. He stood so confidently before us, climbing straight up boulders without a second thought. It felt incredibly appropriate to spot this beautiful creature right before the start of the new year, as they’re a sign of new beginnings and confidence on the path ahead. We’re hoping to bring some of this beautiful energy with us into the new year.

We’re ending the last day of this year simply: a hot bath to soak our well hiked muscles, and a drink with friends is all we need. Happy New Year everyone! Here’s to more outdoor adventures in 2018.
