We’ve been very conscious of the kinds of technology we bring into our home out in the desert, since part of the desert experience we love so much is to slow down and enjoy the process of living, creating, and being. When we do bring technology into our home, it’s something to assist us in […]
New Moon Playlist featuring Cape Weather
Our April New Moon Spotify Playlist kicks off with the effortlessly cool “Telephono” by California’s Cape Weather. The band is the collaborative project of Natalie Smith and Eric Jackowitz, the latter being the drummer for Nick Waterhouse (hence the soulful production). The accompanying music video just premiered on NPR, and we can’t get enough of […]
Making Watercolors from Sands and Cacti with Stella Maria Baer
We are so excited to have Stella Maria Baer back in town on June 9th to host a watercolor pigment workshop! Join us at the Casita for a full day workshop of creating paint pigments from our surrounding desert environment: sands and cacti. We love the idea that this wild and alien landscape surrounding us […]
New Moon Playlist No.02 featuring Kelly McFarling
For our March New Moon Spotify Playlist, we’re featuring Kelly McFarling. Kelly is an Atlanta, GA born, San Francisco-based songwriter. The lead single “Records” has received over 3 million streams on Spotify since it’s […]
Reflecting on Two Years of Desert Living
Over the weekend we celebrated two years of full-time desert living. We moved for a variety of reasons—a lower cost of living (though coming from San Francisco most places are), a desire to be more connected to nature, to work remotely as freelance designers, and simply because every time we came to Joshua Tree it […]
Moroccan Rugs by Soukie Modern
Rugs are one of our favorite elements to choose for the homes we design—they bring so much warmth, color, and texture to a space. A home is meant to be lived in, and so natural materials that age well are always our first choice. For this reason, we’re often drawn to designing with vintage rugs. They’re […]
Joshua Tree Bandanas
About this time last year, we were at Desert + Denim with our favorite sisters Megan and Jen Mussari, dreaming about creating a Joshua Tree bandana together. We wanted the whole bandana to be inspired by the plants and animals that live here, and ultimately go to benefit the natural world. We’re excited to have […]
New Moon Playlist No.01 featuring Ora Cogan
On the New Moon, the earth, moon, and sun align making us unaware of the moon’s presence in the sky. Without the visual presence and glow of the moon, other celestial bodies typically hidden now shine brighter. Our chances of seeing the sky clearly are heightened on this day, making it a day of clarity […]
The Assembly (Before & After)
An original 1905 church in the Mission district of San Francisco is now a place to put down your phone or laptop for a while (only if you want to), maybe write (with pen and paper), read (from a physical book), rest (without guilt), and physically push yourself to strength (and tears). It’s a place […]
At Home in Joshua Tree for the Holidays
Slowing down to enjoy the sweet moments is certainly not easy, especially this time of year. Ironically, in order to leave time and space for less, more work, more everything inevitably follows. For all of the extra work that we did to prepare for hosting our families in Joshua Tree this year, we were rewarded with more time outdoors (and incredibly beautiful weather). We spent Christmas afternoon enjoying a meal together in 75 degree sunshine, followed by a sunset hike.
