We have exciting news to share: we’re hosting our second annual JTH Tucson Spirit Pot mini-retreat from May 1st-2nd. We have tickets available for locals who’d like to come in just for the evening of May 1st, as well as overnight tickets that come with a room or suite at the inn for those that would like to make a retreat out of it.
It’ll be a magical evening spent under the waxing moon while we decorate and wood-fire spirit pots with Shazieh of Agave Pantry, enjoy a desert inspired family style meal by our in-house Chef Aaron our dining patio, sample our house-made prickly pear wine, and relax under the stars during a guided sound bath with Spiritual Abode. Early May is an extra special time to visit as prickly pear cactus and many other varieties of cacti will be in bloom!
Full Itinerary
May 1st, 2024
- 3pm: Check-in (if selecting an overnight ticket)
- 4-6pm: Spirit Pot workshop part one (includes tea and Shazieh’s famous Love Cake)
Choose from a variety of pots pre-thrown and bisque fired by Shazieh, each pot has been stamped with a dry cholla rib marking the Sonoran desert. After brief introductions, you will participate a hands on demonstration of ‘dressing’ your premade pot and the various materials you can use for the evening’s alternate pit ‘metal can’ firing. Dress your pots and Shazieh will lend a hand should you need it. Each pot will then be placed on a bed of sawdust and we’ll sprinkle it with seaweed, salts, and other combustible materials.
- 6pm: Gather to light the pit can fire together. Please feel free to bring any slips of paper, letters, and combustible non toxic items you wish to burn away and let go off to add to the firing. Once the fire is lit and the sawdust and wood glowing we shall let it work its magic overnight.
- 6:30pm: Family style Southwestern dinner with Chef Mike (please let us know if you have dietary restrictions), followed by a tasting of our house made Prickly Pear wine.
- 8:30pm: Evening sound bath with Jess Holzworth under the stars.
May 3rd, 2024
- 8am: Light breakfast in room for overnight guests (locally made granola, coffee & prickly pear tea).
- 9-10am: Spirit Pot workshop part two (finishing touches on Spirit Pot). We will reconvene in the morning to open the can and clean, beeswax and finish the pot together. A collection of gemstones to choose from and copper wire will be provided to embellish it.
- 11am: Check-out for overnight guests.
*Note for evening retreat guests: if you’d prefer to only come for the evening of May 1st to make your pot, you may choose your stone on the first evening for Shazieh to finalize your piece. She asks that if you’d like to go this route, that you coordinate to pick up your piece within one week at her studio in Tucson.
JTH Tucson is located bordering the west side of Saguaro National Park—directions for arrival will be sent after ticket purchase.
What is a Spirit Pot?
“Spirit Pots or dream/moon pots are altar/ritual pieces to feed your soul. (Not food safe.)
Use them with some sand to contain a small smoking smudge stick post cleansing or fill them with new moon and full moon affirmations on small bits of paper. Look back on your affirmations on the last full moon of the year and release what no longer serves you.
These pots aim to inspire and remind one to dream a little.
Each one is stamped with a small dry cholla rib to mark our Sonoran Desert. Wrapped with copper wire and gemstones.”
-Shazieh
We hope to have you out for this magical evening under the waxing moon! If you have any questions about the mini-retreat before booking, please feel free to email us at frontdesk@thejoshuatreehouse.com.
