An Unexpected Discovery
As our fifth-anniversary approaches, we can’t help but reminisce about our time at JTH Tucson and all that’s changed since we first stumbled upon the property in 2018 (including our desert inspired canyon pool).
The once-abandoned property had great bones and displayed the skillful craftsmanship and dedication of its original builder, Merv Larson, a former Executive Director of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum nearby.
When we first toured this incredible property (that had somehow been for sale for a decade!), we immediately knew two things:
- First, that we would be spending the next year of our lives (or however long it would take) to restore this incredible architecture.
- Second, that in the end, we would open it up as a small inn for guests in need of the time and space to reset, slow down, feel creatively inspired, and reconnect with nature.
This hidden desert gem continuously provided more buried treasure as we got to know the property.
Perhaps our favorite discovery, along with many of our guests, is the canyon pool. (When we first toured the property, we had no idea that this was a pool!)
Before & After
Crafted from natural rock molds sourced from Ventana Canyon, the Canyon Pool captures the rugged beauty of the Tucson landscape as a living diorama.
Each curve and texture of the pool reflects the unique characteristics of the surrounding rock formations, creating a seamless blend of elegance and nature.
We knew we wanted to preserve much of Larson’s vision, so we set forth to restore the outdoor area, as opposed to recreating it.
A Canyon Pool in the Desert
While we take pride in the work and effort we put into renovating our small desert inn, we also understand that we are part of a much bigger story.
From its construction in the 1970’s to becoming a quiet sanctuary for our guests today, the collective pieces of the property that make it so unique are one desert dweller’s love letter to Tucson and now a gift for our guests to enjoy.
Whether you’re looking to cool off under the sun, enjoy a peaceful swim, or simply relax by the water, the Canyon Pool offers a tranquil retreat embodying our desert oasis’s spirit. We would love to have you stay to experience this extraordinary space and find out why it has become such a beloved part of JTH Tucson,
