The bones of JTH Tucson were amazing from day one (and why we bought the property in the first place), but the bathrooms were never really the star of the show. While we didn’t have to make any major layout changes (nor could we afford to), they were in major need of a surface level update. We wanted to hang onto the history and character of this building, but not so much the 80’s bathroom fixtures. We partnered with Build.com to transform these outdated bathrooms.
Planning a Bathroom Renovation with Build.com
So many of you have told us that when it comes to renovating a space, your main concerns are budget and what order the actual renovation process goes in. When planning your budget, know that if you can leave the existing plumbing in its original footprint it will save your dollars for actual plumbing fixtures, lighting, and vanity etc. You can see in the shared bathroom below that we kept the existing layout, but updated the space with a new sink and faucet from Build.com.
Steps to follow when updating a bathroom
- Figure out bathroom layout (we always do our best to work within the existing layout to save on budget)
- Look at your plumbing needs, and choose a brand you’d like to go with asap so you can get your plumber to install the correct valves (we went with Delta fixtures from Build.com) Build.com also offers free help 7 days a week from Project Experts if you ever feel stuck deciding!
- Repeat the same for lighting (custom lighting can take a while to come in, so order as soon as possible! We went with lighting from Cedar & Moss)
- Decide what sink and vanity you’d like to use. Here, we covered the existing vanity structure in waterproof plaster (tadelakt), and chose this chiseled stone sink to sit on top.
- If you’re going to do any tiling, find your tiler (it can be time consuming finding a quality tiler, so make sure to check out some of their previous work before making a decision)
- After your plumber has installed the plumbing and valves, tiling can begin!
- Once the tile is grouted and sealed, the plumber can come back to attach the fixtures to the plumbing.
- Then it’s time for details like paint, plaster, etc!
We’re so happy with how this space turned out—the wooden ceiling and plaster vanity nod to the adobe style of the building, and the chiseled sink and matte black faucet update this bathroom without making it feel too modern.
You can see with the next bathroom below that we kept the layout, but simplified the space to bring attention to its best qualities (like that beautiful ceiling and that sunken tub! The fixtures in here were dinky and didn’t feel like they owned up to how magical this bathroom could be, so we added in a brass Delta wall tub faucet, and Delta Trinsic shower head.
This next bathroom was probably our least favorite room of the entire inn when we began renovations. It was also a challenge seeing that it had no windows to begin with—lighting is everything! We brightened this space up significantly with custom tile work by Fireclay, removed the previous light fixture since it was casting a yellow glow in this room, and brought it into the present day with vessel sinks and brass fixtures.
We’re so excited to share these updated bathrooms with all of our upcoming guests at JTH Tucson! Sending a huge thank you to Build.com for partnering with us on these bathroom updates, and having such a wide variety of product to choose from. They saved us so much unnecessary stress by having everything in stock and ready to ship. You can read more about the renovation on their blog here.
