We are so excited to share that our book on design and desert living called ‘At Home in Joshua Tree: A Field Guide to Desert Living’ releases in a little less than two weeks! Though it will look beautiful on your coffee table, we thought it would be fun to share a little more about what’s inside as well. This book is meant to be a design and lifestyle guide to refer back to, no matter where you live.
The book begins with our design mantras: phrases we repeat as we design interior and exterior spaces:
Design Mantras
- Blur Indoor and Outdoor Space
- Curate a Home that Enhances with use
- Design for Ordinary Experiences
- Always Add Plants (Real Ones)
We go deep into each mantra breaking down how each one influences and guides our design process.
Throughout our design mantras, we also share some of our favorite recipes, as well as a full Moroccan rug guide in collaboration with Soukie Modern, and a Mojave desert plant guide (including how to plant a cactus).
Rituals for Each Time of Day
In the next half of the book, we cover rituals for each time of day beginning with sunrise through evening. We collaborated with friends and desert lovers such as woodworker Aleksandra Zee, high desert restaurant la Copine, Casey Goch of Shreebs coffee, beauty and wellness expert Tienlyn Jacobson, abstract painter Heather Day, painter Stella Maria Baer, Joshua Tree furniture studio Fire on the Mesa, painter Caris Reid, and herbalist Sophia Rose to share rituals of their own.
We go over everything from creating a calm home, to the perfect cup of tea or coffee, to keeping our bodies (inside and out) hydrated in our dry climate. We also share a full trail guide to Joshua Tree National Park with ten of our favorite trails including Hidden Valley, North View trail, and the Cholla Garden.
In our animal symbols guide written in collaboration with Caris Reid, we share some of our favorite desert animals and the themes and concepts of your life that they signify. The big horn sheep pictured above is one of our favorite desert creatures, a sign of new beginnings.
At the end of the book, we share one of our favorite times in the desert: evening. At night, we can see what feels like every star. Some nights we head out in an attempt to capture the beauty through photography, so we included a new moon photography guide as well.
