Rugs are one of our favorite elements to choose for the homes we design—they bring so much warmth, color, and texture to a space. A home is meant to be lived in, and so natural materials that age well are always our first choice. For this reason, we’re often drawn to designing with vintage rugs. They’re so beautifully made, and we love the stories that they tell. Many moroccan rugs are made from Berber sheep wool, and wear beautifully over time.
Slowly but surely, our personal home in Joshua Tree has begun to fill with Moroccan rugs, sourced from our friends and low desert neighbors: Kenya and Taib of Soukie Modern. They have a beautiful shop in Palm Springs, and are so incredibly knowledgable about the tribes that create beautiful Moroccan rugs, some favorites being: Ait Bou Ichaouen (aka Talsint), Azilal, Beni M’Guild, Beni Ourain, Boucherouite, Boujad, Kilim, Ourika, and Tuareg. Taib grew up in Morocco and has many stories to share about the Moroccan markets and vendors, and the stories of the rugs themselves. The rug below our dining room table for example is a Beni M’Guild, that has faded and worn beautifully over time.
In our guest bedroom, we have a Marmoucha rug from the 70’s (a neighboring tribe to Beni Ourain). We love these subtle oranges and purples almost as much as the story behind the rug itself. Taib told us that a rug like this was most likely pulled out for special occasions and visitors, allowing it to stay in such great shape for so long.
Next time you’re in Palm Springs, take some time out to visit Kenya and Taib at their shop. In the meantime, you can follow @soukiemodern on Instagram for rug inspiration, and drool over the rugs on their site.
