After living in the desert for almost a year full-time now (we ditched city living in March of 2016), we’ve been able to experience the cacti surrounding us seasonally.

Spring blooms bring with them some very happy bees that drunkenly roll through the pollen in complete bliss. Each cactus blooms a different color at a different time. It’s like a symphony of color.

In late Summer when the blooms have fallen, cactus fruit also known as ‘tuna’ begin to grow. The antelope squirrels precariously climb and balance on the cacti to get a juicy bite of the fruit. A desert tortoise may wander by and eat extra fallen fruit, leaving the scene with purple juice smeared across her face.

In Fall, we were surprised by yet another bloom. For a week or two it felt like Spring again, and we would get up early to catch night blooms that would last only a few hours once the sun was up.

With the entrance of Winter, we’ve experienced an incredible amount of rain. The dust gets washed away, and the colors of the cacti become saturated. Dusty pinks turn to vibrant reds, and this dry landscape transforms into a cactus jungle.
