I’d been wanting to visit New Orleans for a long time, so we decided it was a must-stop for our cross country trip. This city has so much character and so many stories. We decided to stay for a few days so that we could soak it all in.
We started our trip off with a mission: to get some beignets in our bellies. Our first stop was Cafe du Monde. It was a very relaxed place where you can sit outside and order a pile of beignets for pretty cheap. Of course, the next day we had to compare these beignets to the ones at Cafe Beignet. I thought the atmosphere here was more charming, and the beignets a little tastier even! I have to say though, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the beignets in New Orleans.
We roamed the streets checking out the little shops and admiring lovely balconies, shutters, streetlights… it’s one of the cities with the most character in the U.S.
One afternoon, we decided to do a tea service at Le Salon. We sat in the coziest chairs and enjoyed a couple of hours catching up with some friends over the most delicious little sandwiches, tea, and desserts.
Obviously, we had a ton of mint juleps while in New Orleans. Our favorite spots we had them were at Kingfish and Pat O’Brien’s.
My favorite moment in New Orleans was the Preservation Hall Jazz Band show we went to. The group was so talented that I couldn’t help but smile the whole time they were playing. The show was pretty short (about 50 minutes) and when they were done I just wanted them to keep going! We ended up buying their record, and then heading on over to Pat O’Brien’s for some piano duels.
All in all, Nola reminded me of a combination of Vegas and Charleston. I was more into the charm of the city than the drinking culture, so we pretty much avoided Bourbon street. I loved the French Quarter and will have to go back sometime to explore the swamps and plantations. Plus I think a ghost tour could be fun!
